'' 'Gosh, how exciting,' said Peter, in a very unexcited voice. '' 'Lion attacks, move back two spaces,' read Judy. When Peter's piece is on the seventh square, this is what happens: They take it home and, for lack of anything better to do, play it. Van Allsburg's ''Jumanji,'' two children, Judy and Peter, find a board game left under a tree in a park near their house. Sendak's may well become a children's classic. Both books do achieve what a children's book must, though not to the same degree or in the same way. Both of these writer-illustrators know that, in the normal course of things, a children's book will be read over and over, and that it had better hold up, providing an almost inexhaustible source of delight, musings, ponderings. Sendak for more books than anyone can count.
